Clinometer (Tree height)

Tree height is a clinometer for the Palm OS. It allows you to estimate the height of a tree or other object if you know your distance to the object. You will need a measuring tape and a length of string with a weight in addition to your palm program. Use Treeheight.prc for color systems, TreeheightBW.prc for B&W systems. Both require that you install MathLib.prc.

Measure your distance from the tree or object as shown in the above diagram. You measurements can be in any units and the results will be displayed in those units. You don't have to be 10 units away. Hold a string with a weight at the upper left corner of your Palm and sight along the left edge of the palm to the top of the tree. The thread will show the angle (in the above example, 30 degrees). NOTE: the string must cross the top left corner of the screen or the angle will be off.

Enter your distance from the tree and the observed angle. Press the calculate button and read the tree height in the original units...
