Using Track ![]()
Track allows one to follow the
movements and behavior or an animal or person on a map. Intended for
behavioral ecologists. The X/Y coordinates, time, and behavior can be
extracted from the data file. To use track install the following files:
After installing the above, click on the Track

| If Track Maps exist on the device you can LOAD an existing map. | ![]() |
| Or create a new map (here, called "Gorilla"). Write in the map name and the press the CREATE button. | ![]() |
| A blank drawing area is created for you to place your map. You can draw lines from one point to another and/or place various icons on the screen to represent ponds, bushes, trees, etc. If you need to draw an outline of the study area, press the DRAW ON button. | ![]() |
| By clicking from one point to another you can make a drawing of the outline of the study area. | ![]() |
| When you are finished, press the DRAW OFF button. If you goof up, press the CLS button to clear the screen and start all over. | ![]() |
| The STICKY ICONS check box makes it possible to place a number of the same type of icon without having to re-select it. | ![]() |

| And place it as many times as you need. Choose other icons to place other features on the map as shown to the right. Press the BACK ARROW (upper right of screen) to return to the main menu. | ![]() |
| You're now ready to record. If you exit at this time the Gorilla map will be saved for later use. Otherwise, you can use the map immediately. A default file name is created consisting of the date and present time. For the example, the date is 2003 (03), November (10), 10th at 1:49 PM (13:49). You can create another name for the file if you wish. If the file already exists it will be overwritten and the data will be lost. Press RECORD to begin data collection. | ![]() |
| The DATA INPUT screen opens and the current map is drawn. Press the BEGIN button when you are ready to start. | ![]() |
| Click on the screen to record the movement of the animal from one point on the map to another. | ![]() |
| If the animal performs a behavior, you can enter a one letter or number code for the behavior. The animal sat down at this point and "S" was entered into the graffiti area. More than one code can be entered for each location on the map. | ![]() |
| Another behavior, lying down was seen at this point, so an "L" was entered into the graffiti area. NOTE: all letters are converted to upper case in this version of track. If you are using a keyboard, the keyboard will be recognized. If you would like to enter both upper and lower characters, contact me and I'll re-compile the program for you. Press the EXIT button when you are finished recording. | ![]() |
| Now press the SAVE & EXIT button to save your data. | ![]() |
| To view your data, start Tracker again and press the REVIEW button. | ![]() |
| Choose your data set and click the INCLUDE LANDMARKS checkbox if you want the map also drawn. Press the REVIEW button to see the results. | ![]() |
| The map is drawn along with the path taken by your subject. Places where behaviors were recorded are indicated as small circles (Annotations). Press the SUMMARY button to see the actual data. | ![]() |

| If behaviors were recorded they'll show up in the last column. You can determine where and when each behavior occurred. Click the back arrow or REV. MENU button to return to the main menu. | ![]() |
