Pond Water Lab- Read Me First
- Purpose: To follow the changes in a pond water
community over time. You will return to this lab several times during the
semester. Data collected from each session will be compared to one another as
to they types of species you discover and the species diversity (The
calculator and link to explanation are found
here).
- Work in groups of two. Transfer a drop of pond water
(back of the room) and identify the organisms. Note: You'll probably have to
use both a dissecting microscope and a compound scope.
- Data to collect: Identify each species and provide the
relative frequencies for the various species on a 0-5 scale. Score as "0" if
none were found, "1" if only one or two were seen then through "5" (Very
abundant numbering in the hundreds or thousands)..
- During the lab run the PowerPoint found
here.
- Transfer your data to
this Excel
worksheet and e-mail to me. These data will be pooled for the entire
class. You will answer questions and base your calculations on the group data.
Questions will be provided based on the nature of the data.
