Sponges are handy for sopping up those nasty pools of blood that accompany nuclear or conventional weapons attacks and/or exposure to hemorrhagic fevers. Some general info on bioterrorism is here

When sponging blood from open wounds, make sure to remove the sponge lest it be internalized and turned into a pseudotumor.
