Human Attraction
by Amanda Bierly and Aaron Glaser
Human attraction is based on many different things. According to Darwin, it is based on the bases of reproduction. Those males and females that look the most healthy will be the ones to find a mate the quickest and be able to pass those traits on to future generations. This was called sexual selection. This theory talked about a certain individuals advantage over another due to reproductive advantages. Generally speaking, males tend to choose those displaying youth, fertility, and health. Females on the other hand look for youth and competitive ability.
There are many characteristics that contribute to a persons beauty. We surveyed twenty-five college students on what they found attractive and what was not. Both males and females were asked the same five questions.
They were both asked about weight, posture, hair color, as well as piercings and tattoos. These five specific questions were chosen because they were not gender specific.
Here is what we found from our surveys, first the males and then the females.
Males:

Females:

We found many of the results to be contradicting to most beliefs. For example it is said that men prefer girls with blonde hair, but our results did not find this to be true. Plus most men prefer women that are of average size, rather than skinny.
Of course we did not survey the population at large, but instead a very small population of it, therefore these findings may be totally against those of the population. Plus, another factor is those people who bend the truth slightly.
In conclusion we still believe that people are attracted to those who do exhibit most of the qualities Darwin found, but it still remains as personal opinion. Men prefer those with small noses, chins, etc. While women prefer those with strong features such as large chins and cheek bones.
