Importing Excel Data

FIRST, MAKE SURE THE DATA ARE IN STATA FORMAT!!!

CHECK HERE

Open your spreadsheet. Make sure that it is in Stata format (column-arranged variables, no row or column breaks). This data set has a row break in the first row that must be removed.

Row is deleted so that the first row shows the variable names. Bold, underline, centering, italics, and other text enhancements will not be imported into Stata.

Choose the "Save As" function from the file menu.

Save the file as a Tab-delimited  Text file

Tell excel not to panic two times. If you do have additional sheets, they will have to be imported separately.

Open Stata. From the file menu, import an ASCII data set created by a spreadsheet

Mouse on over to the data file.

Tell the browser that you're looking for a Text File (*txt) and click on it.

Hit the OK button.

Data are imported (7 vars. 10 obs).

Use the editor in Stata to check it out!
